[...] There are plenty of other great podcasts in the area and you’ll pick up their names once you start listening. In fact you’ll find that social media consultants are a fairly self-referential bunch. Jon’s latest podcast from Melbourne, for instance, is an interview with Sallie Goetsch (rhymes with “sketch”) in the US; and Sallie recently left a comment on this blog, another on Bryan’s, and she contributes to FIR; as does Bryan, who is also mentioned often on Inside PR and Donna’s podcast, and Bryan has commented on our podcast… [...]

Hi Bryan,

It's great to hear from you. I've been listening to New Comm Road for a while now and of course I hear you on FIR, so it's a treat to have you comment on our podcast.

Personally I didn't find the Starbucks background a problem when you were talking to Doug. I guess what we've both learned is that it probably is best to stick to a quieter location because that way you alienate no listener.

More importantly, thanks for the great interview about blogger relations. It's extraordinary to me that it's taking some people so long to realise, as you and Doug said, that it's not about pitching bloggers in a better, more personal way than journalists are usually targetted: journalists should always have been approached better.

Steven:

Really enjoyed your inaugural podcast and looking forward to the next one. As a Yank who spent two years in Australia earlier in the decade (living in sunny Bris Vegas), I have an extra special interest in following your social media scene.

Interestingly, Gus's criticism is similar to what a listener said about the most recent episode of my podcast all about managing an effective blogger relations campaign - http://www.newcommroad.com/2007/05/14/ncr-031-managing-a-blogger-relations-campaign/

We recorded in a cafe, and I was hoping the ambient noise would add to the listening experience. Instead, it helped to distract the listeners from the conversation because there was just too much of it. Lesson learned.

Waiting for episode two!

Thanks for the feedback, Gus. You'll be pleased to know that the next episode was recorded in an IBM conference room where the biggest problem was a couple of squeaky chairs :)

While it is good to hear some on the ground experiences of using social media in Australia - and in particular as a podcast - I find the experience too exhausting to listen to and I just ended up reading the transcript.

I wonder if there are better places to record a podcast than a busy cafe with what I guess is not the best mic for the job on auto gain. I do agree that just getting the podcast out there as a medium is good to build on podcasting as a tool but using difficult to listen to audio is not helpful especially the mobile phone interference and the constant crashing of cutlery. Good podcasting requires more than some talent and a subject but some audio production standards as well.

Thanks for this - very informative. I find it interesting that Simon Baker isn't worried about ROI on blogs - good on him. Forrester Research have a report called "Calculating The ROI Of Blogging: A Case Study, A Look At The ROI of General Motor’s FastLane Blog". But it's all a bit bonkers - brand visibility, customer insights, reduced impact from negative UGC, increased sales efficiency. I'd probably throw in brand recall, reduced customer service costs and a couple of other things. Problem is, if i read it right, Forresters see a REDUCED value over time as press mentions reduce. Yet often the opposite happens, the value of press mentions decreases as the number of subscribers, links and other metrics increase. anyway, enough jabbering on from me. :)
